Recycling by horse cart

I was so happy to see that someone besides me is recycling in La Ceiba. This just shows that it CAN be done, even though I hear people pooh-pooh the idea all the time.

recycling by horse cart, La Ceiba, HondurasIn a country where there is so much poverty, there are people who will take the time to collect bottles and cans. Sadly, those people don't usually have transportation to take the things to where they can be sold. With gas costing US $3.50 per gallon, it isn't cost efficient to have a pick up service. This seems like the perfect solution!

There are also people who understand the importance and would recycle the things from their household, if it was made easy for them. I really think this is something that the city could organize and it wouldn't have to cost the taxpayers a dime. In the long run, it would save the city money on landfill costs, cleaning out sewers, street clean ups, not to mention making the city more attractive for tourists and its citizens! Heaven knows there are enough plastic Coke bottles here to circle the earth.

Just a tip for those readers living in La Ceiba or elsewhere in Honduras:

When the bag or bags are full, we put them out for the regular trash collectors who are very grateful. They resell the materials but generally have to dig through everyone's nasty, smelly garbage to pull them out. It helps them to earn a little more money and we feel much better about our recyclables not filling up the landfill.

It's simple and easy so just talk to your trash collectors about whether they recycle or whether they would if you make it easy for them.
